Spain Introduces Digital Nomad Visa for Freelancers

Spain is recognized for its accessibility, delectable cuisine, and beautiful scenery. It has become well-known among foreign nationals. Recently, a “digital nomad visa” was introduced to entice remote and freelance workers to the nation.

After the Startup Law was approved, the visa will become operational this year. The law aims to foster an atmosphere that is favorable to enterprise, talent, and investment. This is everything you should know about the digital nomad visa:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Individuals who are not EU/EAA citizens and are employed or freelance remotely.
  • A job with a non-Spanish company.
  • The applicant cannot have resided in Spain within the previous five years.
  • The applicant cannot be staying in Spain illegally.

Other Conditions

  • Candidates must have a minimum of three months of work experience with their present employer or clients. They have to be employed by a business that has been around for at least a year. The ability to work remotely must also be demonstrated.
  • Candidates must be graduates or postgraduates from recognized colleges, technical institutions, or business schools, or they must have a minimum of three years of overall work experience.
  • Candidates must demonstrate their financial stability by making at least 200% of Spain’s current monthly minimum wage of €2,334 (about Rs. 690,567), or €28,000 (roughly Rs. 8.28 million) annually. Each accompanying family member requires an additional 25% of this income.
  • Applicants must have a clean criminal record for the previous five years in addition to obtaining comprehensive private health insurance.

Visa Period

A digital nomad’s visa is valid for either 12 months or the length of their employment, whichever comes first. It can be extended for up to five years. Applicants can submit a permanent residency application after five years.

Applying Process

Candidates can enter Spain on a tourist visa and apply within the first three months, or they can apply for a digital nomad visa through an embassy or consulate. The processing of a visa could take between 15 and 45 days. The cost of the application is roughly €80. (Rs. 23,669).

Necessary Documents

  • National Visa Application Form completed.
  • Two passport photos, as well as a valid passport.
  • Evidence of employment, such as a work agreement or an employer’s letter of confirmation for a remote job.
  • Proof that the employer/company has been in existence for at least a year.
  • Proof of income.
  • Evidence of credentials, such as a college degree or professional certification.
  • Proof of health insurance.
  • Certifications for the last five years’ worth of criminal background checks.
  • Evidence of relation to other familial candidates through marriage or birth certificates.
