Social media giants Twitter, Instagram put censorship over Palestine citing ‘technical glitches’

JERUSALEM: Social media giants Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have allegedly put discriminatory algorithms to censor content related to the recent oppression by Israeli authorities in occupied Jerusalem.

Report of an Arab media cited that oppressed residents of Sheikh Jarrah, an illegally occupied neighborhood by Israel, have started protesting over the bias of US-based social media platforms. The Palestinian activists found their posts deleted while some user’s accounts blocked starting last week.

7amleh, a non-profit Arab center for the advancement of social media, claimed that more than 200 similar complaints have been registered in this regard. An advocacy adviser of watchdog stated that most of the content related to Sheikh Jarrah was taken down on the photo and video sharing platform Instagram while the microblogging platform Twitter suspended a number of accounts for posting on Israeli aggression.

Many other digital advocacy platforms also shared similar developments. ‘Instagram and its parent, Facebook, have been censoring posts related to Sheikh Jarrah for at least the past day’, a tweet read. Adding that, Instagram has also limited content with hashtag #Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, social networking platform Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, clarified that ‘an automated update last week caused content re-shared by multiple users to appear as missing, affecting posts on Sheikh Jarrah, Colombia, and US and Canadian indigenous communities.

It also expressed apology over the matter.’We are so sorry this happened. Especially to those in Colombia, East Jerusalem, and Indigenous communities who felt this was an intentional suppression of their voices and their stories — that was not our intent whatsoever, the statement further reads.

Let it be known that, the recent brutal attacks on Palestinian worshipers started over the heightened tensions amid the forced eviction of Palestinians from land claimed by Jewish families. As for now, the death toll from Israeli airstrikes has climbed to 43, including 13 children, the Gaza health ministry said Wednesday.
