Retired civil servant arrested for hanging cat to death in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The federal law enforcers Sunday apprehended Raja Abdul Qayyum, a retired civil servant for torturing and hanging to death a cat on the stairs of his house in the country’s federal capital.

The police action came after the clip of the cat’s corpse hanging from the stairs went viral on social media which triggered a massive outcry.

Reports quoting sources cited that a woman shared a clip of the gruesome and heart-wrenching incident on social media in a bid to alarm the federal officials especially Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat who holds a repute in countering social issues.

Soon after the deputy commissioner took the notice of the heinous incident, the police of the Lohi Bher area nabbed Qayyum and lodged a case under section 429 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Let it be known that whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming any animal shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to five years, or with both.

Later, DC Islamabad also confirmed the development on his official handle.

Lohi Bher police while speaking with a media outlet said that the complainant Anila Umair has also lodged a written complaint against the accused.

Meanwhile, the investigation officer also added that the accused denied killing the cat by hanging and said that he did not know who strangled the cat to death on the stairs of his house. In his statement to the police, he said he was unaware as to who had killed the cat and then hanged her from the stairs.

The complainant however alleged that Qayyum does not hold a good repute in the neighborhood since many assumed him as a ‘sadist’ while further investigations are underway.

On the other hand, a number of animal rights activists vented their anger over the heinous incident after the clip went viral on social media.

Animal rights union had also demanded the federal cops to take stern action against Qayyum for tormenting and torturing the animal.
