‘Real-life Dolly Ki Doli’: Bride dupes groom, runs away with cash, jewelry after man went to fetch water

LUCKNOW: In a similar plot to the 2015 Bollywood movie Dolly ki Doli, an Indian newlywed bride duped her husband as she ran away with the cash and jewellery gifted by the groom’s family in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Reports in Indian media quoting sources said the reel-like incident occurred on August 17 when the newlywed couple was on their way home after the wedding rituals.

The con woman asked the groom to bring a bottle of water while being on a bus stand in Mainpuri city and she managed to escape before the man came with the water. She reportedly took all their belongings including INR 80,000 cash along with the jewellery.

Later, the man deprived of all belongings approached Mainpuri Beware police station to lodge a complaint. During the probe, it was revealed that the groom who is identified as Raju fixed the marriage through a mediator, who placed a condition before the groom’s family to pay Rs 80,000 to the girl and Raju’s father agreed to pay as he was not getting married due to some reasons, per reports.

The police lodged the complaint under the fraud charges on the complaint of the groom’s father, Rajendra. He also mentioned his relative Roop Lal who introduced them to the bride’s family and added that they were told to pay the amount – in an opposite manner as usually, Indian brides used to pay as dower.

No police officer has commented on the development with any media outlet while proceedings are underway.

The incident is not a first of its kind as anoother woman in India’s Agra runs away with INR 50,000 and jewellery after sedating her husband and father-in-law back in May this year.
