Rare fish with Human-Like Teeth caught in US

RALEIGH: A fisherman in North Carolina became famous overnight after he caught a rare sheepshead fish which has human-like teeth.

It all started with a Facebook post on a page that goes by the name of Jennette’s Pier. The post that garnered universal attention and stirred fear among local beachgoers stated that fisherman Nathan Martin caught the ‘nice toothy 9 lb’ sheepshead fish on August 03.

Two of the pictures were shared on the official Facebook and in one of the photos; the fish can be seen with its mouth open, displaying its sets of teeth that shared an uncanny resemblance to human beings.

Later, it was identified as a sheepshead fish, which has several rows of molars for crushing other animals. The fish is said to be quite delicious and it is also known as ‘convict fish’ because of its black and white stripes.

Reports said Martin took hold of the rare fish while he was fishing with his twin brother. North Carolina aquarium officials were quoted by multiple publications as saying that these fish are extremely difficult to catch, but taste great.

The fisherman from North Carolina, Nathan Martin, while speaking with a local news outlet said ‘he had been hoping to catch a sheepshead fish when he came face-to-face with a mouth full of teeth.’ Adding that, ‘It’s a very good fight when you’re fighting on the line, it’s a really good catch, and it tastes very good.

The discovery of rare fish has also caused a stir online, as netizens finding it hard to believe that a fish can have ‘better teeth than a human’ while local beachgoers seem alerted.

Experts said that sheepsheads are omnivores [like humans] and use their teeth to crustaceans and shellfish. These are reportedly found around the Gulf and Atlantic coasts of the US.

Earlier in February, a fisherman in Florida had also caught a sheepshead fish and was puzzled by its dental features – that are unusual for many.
