The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has requested that YouTube unblock the YouTube account of eminent Muslim scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed, claiming that his videos are educational rather than “hate speech.”
“The PTA has formally addressed Youtube and taken up the topic of the late Dr. Israr Ahmed’s channel being blocked due to allegations of hate speech,” a source at the regulatory organisation told Media. “In addition, the authorities have requested that the video-sharing platform reconsider its decision.”
He believes it raises concerns about the arbitrary boundaries of online expression.
Videos of Dr. Israr Ahmed discussing Islamic discourse, including Quranic teachings and lectures on the implementation of the Islamic system in social and cultural fields, were available on the closed YouTube channel. “Such videos are solely intended to educate the audience,” he explained.
According to a private media site, Dr. Israr Ahmed’s channel has approximately three million subscribers.
The video-sharing platform took down the channel on Friday after receiving reports that it contained anti-Semitic remarks.
