Pakistan approves ordinance restraining children from evicting aging parents

ISLAMABAD: President Dr. Arif Alvi Saturday approved an ordinance under Article 89 of the Constitution that would restrain children from evicting aging parents from their homes.

The incumbent government has enacted the much-awaited Parental Protection Ordinance 2021 in a bid to protect parents against being homeless in old age.

According to Parents Protection Ordinance 2021, forceful eviction of parents comes under criminal offense and will be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term up to one year or fine, or both.

The ordinance stated that parents hold the right to evict their children if they own the premises while the offspring cannot evict parents even if they owned or rented the property. Children will also have to vacate the residence if they are given a notice by their parents, it added.

For the enforcement, the district public administrators will have the powers to evict children. Parents also hold the right to file an official complaint against children in this regard. Law enforcers could arrest without warrants in these cases and the individuals will be presented before a magistrate. Both parties have been given the right to appeal within a month.
