Painlessness isn’t a luxury but a disease

Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP), commonly called Congenital Analgesia, is a rare condition in which a patient does not experience any physical pain.

The CIP is an extremely dangerous condition as one cannot feel any discomfort which leads to no medication.

Generally, there are no physical abnormalities seen in CIP patients as its major symptom is that it remains insensitive to pain, hence they even do not feel tickling. These patients also develop anosmia, therefore losing their sense of smell completely. Doctors say these patients mostly cannot survive four years of their lives after contracting the disease due to unnoticed injuries and illnesses.

It is considered to be a form of peripheral neuropathy, as it hits the peripheral nervous system, which actually links the spinal cord to muscles and cells and helps them in detection of sensations. This disease is actually caused by the mutation in SCN9A gene while the acronym of this gene is Sodium Voltage gated Channel Alpha subunit 9. This gene is responsible for making the sodium channels. Sodium channels found in nerve cells are known to be nociceptors that transmit pain signals. So, when this very important SCN9A gene gets mutated, it causes loss of pain and smell.

This disease may be inherited by patient by either of the parent but in the case of inheritance, it has an autosomal recessive pattern. The parent of a patient carries one copy of mutated gene with them and did not show any sign or symptom of the disease.

To date, there is no cure found for this disease and only prevention is the best cure. Patients should be taken extra care of. Body temperature should be put under control in order to prevent the patient from getting injuries. Moreover, patients must be trained in a way that they should know their anatomy so that they can able to tackle severe conditions whenever required. Further, these patients should take plenty of water to evade dehydration.
