Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan amongst Rolling Stone’s List of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time

The American magazine Rolling Stone has included the master of qawwali Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan among the 200 greatest vocalists of all time.

On the list, which also features artists like Canadian musician The Weeknd, late Indian vocalist Lata Mangeshkar, South Korean singer-songwriter IU, and BTS member Jungkook of K-pop, he came in at number 91. He was referred to as “Shahenshah-e-Qawwali” in the aforementioned article, which also called him “an icon in the world of Qawwali, whose family’s musical history spans hundreds of years.”

The American publication then highlighted the singer’s skill at winning over hearts throughout the globe. “As you listen to how, in the 1980s, when he started touring abroad and releasing songs on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label, his music quickly gathered a fanbase all over the world, it’s tempting to get carried away.

Madonna, Eddie Vedder (with whom he worked on the Dead Man Walking soundtrack), and Jeff Buckley (who dubbed the singer “my Elvis” and learned Urdu to properly cover him) were a few of his many well-known admirers “written the Rolling Stones.

Last but not least, the journal cited a well-known remark made by Khan in 1996, the year before he passed away. The line that was quoted said, “When I sing, I sing from the bottom of my heart.” A well-known Indian musician named Lata Mangeshkar came in at number 84 on the list. She was “the Melody Queen,” the “empress of playback singers,” and the “cornerstone of Indian pop music,” according to Rolling Stones. Among the other singers on the list were Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Billie Holiday, Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Bob Marley, Usher, Chuck Berry, and Billie Holiday.
