Netflix Likely to Release Documentary on the Alleged Corruption of the Sharif Family – Behind Closed Doors

Unconfirmed rumors about the upcoming release of the documentary “Behind Closed Doors,” which would focus on the Sharif family, the extended ruling family of Pakistani politics, and their alleged corruption, have been circulating on social media.

Netflix hasn’t yet provided any formal confirmation, though. Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, Emin Huseynov, Arshad Sharif, Rachel Davies Teka of Transparency International, Tom Stocks of the OCCRP, Shahzad Akbar, and journalist Irfan Hashmi have all contributed to the documentary.

Politically exposed individuals (PEPs) are those who hold public office and, as a result, face higher risks of being implicated in bribery or corruption, according to the documentary’s summary and trailer. PEPs utilize British banking and offshore territories to conceal their riches, launder it, and reinvest it in the world financial system, according to many offshore leaks. They purchase real estate, file lawsuits against detractors, and relocate to London when their careers are on the rocks. The Sharif Family has already been mentioned in documentaries. The Sharif Family’s corruption was also referenced in the 2019 comedy-drama film The Laundromat, which is available on Netflix.

The main focus of the movie was a law practice in Panama City that has a vested interest in assisting the world’s wealthiest people in accumulating larger fortunes. The corruption tales of the Bhutto and Sharif governing dynasties are highlighted in a 1996 BBC documentary titled “Princess and the Playboy.” Michael Oswald and Murtaza Mehdi are the movie’s producer and director respectively. Oswald is a filmmaker, writer, and editor who resides in the UK, according to the IMDb website. However, Geo Fact Check was unable to locate any details about previous works created by Murtaza Mehdi. There is no information about the documentary’s distributor on the Behind Closed Doors website. Additionally, there is no indication of the documentary being added to Netflix or other streaming platforms.

When asked if the documentary would be broadcast on Netflix or Amazon Prime, Michael Oswald responded in an email that the producers have not yet made an official statement on the release platform nor a release date. Oswald said when asked again if there were any plans to make it available on Netflix in the future, he stated that it will rely on their current negotiations with agents, so he cannot comment on that either way.
