Meghan Markle Wears T-Shirt to Support Iranian Women

To encourage Iranian women and girls, the Duchess of Sussex wore a black T-shirt with the Farsi phrase “Women, Life, Freedom.” Ashley Hansen, executive vice president of global communications, and Iranian executive Mandana Dayani, president of Archewell, joined Meghan at the Women@Spotify event at the company’s LA offices.

With the statement, Meghan spoke about the Iranian revolution being led by women and young girls, the power and bravery they display every day, at an event today, and their leadership and battle for fundamental human rights. Dayani uploaded numerous photographs from the event on Instagram.

The Iranian woman who left her country in quest of these very freedoms expressed her gratitude for how she repeatedly chooses to speak for women all over the world. Protests have been taking place all around Iran since Mahsa Amini, 22, died in police custody in September. She had been jailed for “improperly” donning the compulsory hijab in public by Tehran’s morality police, and she died three days later. Even though officials said she died of a heart attack, reports suggest that she was physically assaulted by cops before entering into a coma.

Since then, Iranian women have torched their hijabs and chopped off their hair while shouting “women, life, freedom” during demonstrations. Schoolgirls have joined in the protests as well by uploading pictures and videos of themselves without hijabs. Since the protests began last month, nearly 200 people have died, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran. To demonstrate their solidarity with the Iranian protestors, celebrities including Isabelle Huppert, Juliette Binoche, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Birkin, and Marion Cotillard all cut their hair earlier this month.

Actress Priyanka Chopra has stated her admiration for the strength and tenacity of Iranian women who are protesting the murder of Mahsa Amini. Priyanka said that the voices that “spoke after years of forced quiet” “must not be stemmed.” The actor urged others to join the “critical movement” and stated that “numbers matter.” A black-and-white artwork that Priyanka had made in Mahsa’s honor was also posted.
