For the first time, Lahore Fort has opened its mythological tunnels and dungeons adding to the list of portions tourists can see during their visit to the majestic fort.
The tunnels and dungeons of the Lahore Fort carry numerous myths. It was widely rumored that one tunnel led to Delhi, others to other cities.
Adding to this, many stories of how the dungeons were maintained at that time have also been gossip topics of tourists visiting Lahore Fort. But now LWCA has opened the gates of tunnels and dungeons for one to see for themselves.
Tania Shahab of the LWCA announced this massive step on her Facebook.
“Lahore Fort is being elevated by the Walled City of Lahore Authority. After maintaining and making them safe for all, the ages-old tunnels and dungeons of Lahore Fort will be opened to tourists”, she wrote.
The Lahore Fort is one of the most prestigious structures in the world. It has been a symbol of the city’s early days, rising out of the northwest corner of the walled city. If it could talk, it would say things that would make the listener gasp for air.
The fort is a time capsule that spans centuries. The fort is first mentioned in Al-history Biruni’s of Lahur (Lahore), where it alludes to a fort constructed in the early 11th century.

It’s also mentioned that Malik Ayaz, a favorite of Sultan Mahmud, built a masonry fort at Lahore and repopulated the city, according to Munshi Sujan Rae Bhandari, author of the Khulasatut Tawarikh in 1695-1696 A.D. Khan believes it is the same fort that was destroyed by the Mongols in 1241 and a detachment of Timur’s army in 1398, before being rebuilt in 1421 by Sayyid, Khizr Khan’s son.
In 1566, Mughal ruler Akbar the Great dismantled the previous mud fort and reconstructed it in burnt brick. The fort was expanded by Jahangir, Shah Jahan, and Aurangzeb, Akbar’s successors.
