Kazakhstan Championship: Pakistani Sprinter Shajar Abbas smashes national Record

The 22-year-old Shajar put on a stellar performance, finishing the 100-meter heat in 10.38 seconds, shattering Pakistan’s previous mark of 10.42 seconds established by Afzal Baig in the 2005 Islamic Games held in Makkah.

In the process, Shajar hailing from Sahiwal, qualified for the 100-meter final round, which was going to take place later on Saturday. At an earlier competition held in Iran, Shajar set a record for the 200-meter division by finishing the track in 20.91 seconds.

Abbas wasn’t the only Pakistani to take home a medal; in the men’s 400-meter final, fellow sprinter Abdul Majeed Baloch also came away with a bronze with the timing of 46.86 seconds to place third.

Pakistani sprinter Najma Parveen, the first woman to represent country in two Olympics, wasn’t fit to participate in mega event, AFP letter discloses

With a time of 46.04 seconds, Mixail Litvin of Kazakhstan won the gold medal in the division.  Muhammad Anas Yayha of India took home the silver after crossing the finish line in 46.27 seconds.

Najma won six gold medals at the most recent National Games held in Peshawar.

Arshad Nadeem beat the odds and finished fifth in the javelin throw competition at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Nadeem’s achievement was remarkable because, before the competition, he lacked access to adequate training facilities. Upon his return to Pakistan, he was welcomed with open arms and encouraged the government to invest in the facilities for Pakistani athletes. Talha Talib won the 67kg weightlifting tournament at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He outperformed expectations by placing fifth in the 67KG weightlifting class at the Olympics.
