Karachi Safe City Project initial phase launched

According to a DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority official, the Karachi Safe City Project will gradually install up to 10,000 closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) throughout the city.

According to DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority Dr. Maqsood Ahmed, 4,000 cameras will be put throughout the city in the project’s first phase, and 6,000 in the following phase.

Despite the Supreme Court’s directive to begin the joint venture between the government of Sindh and the National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) in 2016, it was delayed for several reasons. The statement claims that DIG Security and Emergency Services Division Ahmed received the additional responsibility of DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority in January 2022. The project’s launch has advanced significantly since that time.

According to the spokesperson, the project cost, which was previously estimated to be Rs44 billion, was reduced to Rs22 billion, with improved standards, following extensive discussions with all the parties DG Sindh Safe Cities Authority Ahmed presided over a meeting that was attended by representatives of the Sindh Safe Cities Authority, NRTC, the Technical Committee, and all other project stakeholders to formally declare the start of the project.

According to DG SSCA, the project will be launched in two phases and the top technical companies have been chosen from a large pool of alternatives. In the first phase, 2000 already-existing cameras will be upgraded in addition to 4000 new cameras being installed at various locations around the city. 6000 cameras will be put throughout the city during the second phase. For effective surveillance, a total of 12,000 cameras will be put at various sites throughout the city. According to DG SSCA, the initiative will be a historic one for Karachi’s residents in terms of security and monitoring, based on meritocracy and complete transparency.

Each project component was thoroughly reviewed with the NRTC and the vendors by the DG SSCA and technical team. At numerous sessions, more than 50 representatives from various companies gave presentations on the reliability and excellence of their wares. The project includes the crucial elements that were absent from the preceding plans, such as:

  • Upgrading the 2000 CCTV surveillance system.
  • Adding emergency response equipment and vehicles.
  • Human Resource and Training Center.
  • Digital Communication Network.

It was discussed whether to use the PTCL system or any other system. The DG of the Sindh Safe City Project provided his evaluation and discussed strategies for launching the project as soon as possible. He also brought up the possibility of giving NRTC or another group control over the entire system’s operation. Following the meeting, the Chief Minister established a joint committee of the NRTC and Sindh Safe City Authority under the leadership of the chief secretary.
