JI Hind Leader Proposes Azan in ‘Hindi language,’ sparks national debate

Dr. Mohi-ud-Din Ghazi, an Islamic scholar and author affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami of India, has proposed Azan should be given in Hindi from all mosques in the country, which has taken the form of a national debate.

His suggestion comes at a time when hardline Hindu and Hindu organizations in India are objecting to Azan in mosques and wearing the hijab by Muslim girls in educational institutions. While government powered bulldozers are being run on properties of Muslims that are resisting such attacks.

‎While some people and scholars say there is nothing non-Sharae’i in presenting the translation of the adhan, others think that if the Azan is given in Hindi today, tomorrow prayers and recitation of the Qur’an will be forced into Hindi.

In this regard, the royal imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Maulana Syed Ahmad Bukhari, has said that this proposal is unworkable in every way.

What is Dr. Ghazi’s suggestion?

Dr. Mohi-ud-Din Ghazi is the Editor of Zindagi-e-Naw, the monthly magazine of Jamaat-e-Islami India, the Secretary of its Writing Academy, and a member of the Central Majlis-e-Shura.

In a statement issued a few days ago, he not only proposed the call to prayer in Hindi but also issued the script of the proposed call to prayer in that language.

“I know this is a strange idea for you. Because you have never heard or seen it. So you may immediately reject it. But imagine for a moment the scene I saw with the eyes of imagination and want to show you. Maybe you like that scene too. Imagine that this voice is being heard from all the mosques of the country and all the people of the country are listening to it.”

“Allah is great (four times) I testify that no one should be worshiped except Allah (twice) I testify that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah (twice) Let’s worship Allah(twice) Come on in, take a look and enjoy yourself! Allah is great (twice) There is no worship except Allah(once).”

According to Dr. Ghazi, if ‘this Azan’ is given in mosques, it will be a great and clear message to human beings. Isn’t it a great idea for all the people in the country to listen to these divine messages five times a day, understand their meaning and think about them day and night?
