Islamabad Zoo’s Brown Bear Suzie succumbs to cancer in Jordan

ISLAMABAD: The female Himalayan brown bear named Suzie, who was shifted to Jordan after being neglected at a zoo in Islamabad, died fighting cancer in Jordanian sanctuary.

Reports in local media quoting Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) Chairperson Rina Saeed Khan cited that the condition of the 18-year-old deteriorated after her tumor returned. The carnivorous animal was given the best possible treatment by experts of Al Mawa and Four Paws but the tumors spread to the whole body.

The brown bear was shifted to a sanctuary in the Middle Eastern company and the new weather conditions were also akin to her natural habitat in the northern areas.

She was captured from Deosai plains at a tender age and while she spent a life filled with suffering. The poor animal was reportedly malnourished all her life while her teeth were forcibly removed which makes it difficult to eat food.

She later spend all the cramped conditions in a zoo in Pakistan’s capital until Chief Justice Athar Minallah slammed authorities for the action and compared zoos to concentration camps, saying that “it was inhumane to have deprived the bears at Marghazar Zoo of their natural habitat for the mere entertainment of the human species”.

Delving into details, IWMB official said the officials were expecting recovery of the brown bear after she was moved to her new natural habitat and given the best possible medical treatment but she can’t survive.

A statement issued by the IWMB chairperson cited “Unfortunately, surgery to remove the inflamed tumors couldn’t save her and she breathed her last this week. Vets say Suzie had a carcinoma (malignant breast cancer) with metastases combined with kidney dysfunction. May Suzie rest in peace in bear heaven”.
