On Tuesday, former finance minister Sartaj Aziz passed away in Islamabad, as confirmed by both government authorities and officials from the PML-N. The PML-N conveyed the sad news through a post on the social media platform X.
In the announcement, they expressed deep sorrow, describing Mr. Sartaj Aziz as a stalwart, an authentic icon, and a towering figure. They emphasized that his noteworthy contributions to both the nation and the party would always be remembered. Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi shared that Aziz breathed his last earlier in the evening in Islamabad. Abbasi spoke highly of Aziz’s exceptional life characterized by courage, dignity, and integrity, deeming it worthy of celebration. He further acknowledged Aziz’s significant contributions and accomplishments throughout his lifetime.

According to information from state-controlled Radio Pakistan, Aziz occupied significant roles within the Ministry of Finance and the Planning Commission, playing a pivotal role in shaping economic strategies that successfully guided Pakistan through crucial periods. Ahsan Iqbal, the Secretary General of PML-N, characterized Aziz as a veteran of the Pakistan movement and a valuable national asset. Iqbal expressed deep sorrow over Aziz’s passing, emphasizing that his contributions to the nation would be fondly remembered. President Dr. Arif Alvi also conveyed his condolences to Aziz’s family, expressing sadness at the loss. Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar commended the deceased as a seasoned politician and an invaluable asset to the nation.
Acting Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani expressed deep sorrow upon learning about the passing and commended the departed individual as an exceptional gentleman. Jilani described him as an iconic personality who dedicated himself tirelessly to Pakistan, showcasing exemplary commitment. The foreign minister highlighted the deceased’s enduring legacy of intellectual acumen, integrity, and benevolence. Caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi also honored Aziz, acknowledging his pivotal role in Pakistan’s development and emphasizing his indelible contributions to addressing economic challenges. Former information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb characterized Aziz’s impact on Pakistan as immeasurable, citing his exemplary dedication to the PMLN. Former UN ambassador Maleeha Lodhi recognized his distinguished service to the country across various roles.
