Illegal to ban Reporting on Bombings & Shooting Incidents: AEMEND

PEMRA has also received criticism for its ‘illegal’ prohibition on reporting on bomb explosions and shooting occurrences.

From the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (AEMEND). The group claimed that the PEMRA consistently harasses the TV channels and utilizes all available pressure methods to put the management of the TV stations under strain.

In addition to placing a ban on TV channels due to an incorrect interpretation of court orders, it also noted that cable providers regularly stop the transmission of TV channels and issue show-cause notices back-to-back. The PEMRA also prohibited the coverage of bomb blasts, shootings, and other unfavorable events in the nation, while the AEMEND said that an unannounced restriction on airing political leaders’ addresses had been imposed.

According to the group, issuing such directives by the PEMRA was the worst example of abusing the law. The group disagreed with the limitations set by the PEMRA because it believed that the agency should be in charge of enforcing the law, not dictating which TV channels should be available.
