Gang Caught selling expired imported Goodies after tempering date

The Peshawar district administration has dismantled a gang tampering with the expiration date on branded food goods.

On the orders of Deputy Commissioner (DC), Shafiullah Khan, Additional Assistant Commissioner (AAC), and Saleem Ayubi carried out a raid on a godown on Dalzak Road and found a sizable stash of branded food products that had gone bad.

Chocolates, chewing gum, chips, coffee, and milk powder were among the culinary products. The gang was responsible for gathering brand-name foods that had expired from all across the district and reselling them with a new expiration date. The district administration’s squad has taken thousands of stickers, stamps, and pieces of packaging out of the gang’s possession. Shafiullah Khan, the deputy commissioner, said that legal action would be taken against those who had been detained.

Similar circumstances occurred in November 2021 when the Consumer Court Abbottabad, acting on complaints from the public, ordered the closure of three stores on Wednesday and sentenced three store owners to one month in jail on charges of overcharging and selling expired food in various parts of the city. Syed Sajjad Ali Shah, the assistant director of consumer protection in Abbottabad, conducted an inspection of stores on Mandian, Kutchery Road, and the main bazaar.

He discovered that some store owners were charging prices above those listed in the district administration’s price list and that some were also selling food that had gone bad. The AD Consumer Protection reported overcharging and selling expired goods to the Consumer Court in Abbottabad, where the judge ordered the closure of three businesses, sent the owners one month in jail and fined them each Rs30,000.

Many individuals have complained to the district government over the past few weeks about expired and subpar food products being sold in the main Bazaar and Mandian area, as well as about how many retailers were overcharging. While taking rigorous action on all matters, the AD Consumer Protection forwarded the report to the Consumer Court for prosecution.

A retail shop manager was fined Rs. 130,000 by a consumer court in April 2019 for selling “expired” food items that sickened kids. The manager of the business in Block 10 of Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Zafar Hussain, was found guilty of violating Section 21 of the Sindh Consumer Protection Act, 2014 by selling edible goods that were past their expiration dates. The defendant was given Rs. 40,000 fine to be deposited with the court’s Nazir by Judge Javed Ali Korejo. In addition, he was ordered to pay the complaint Rs. 15,000 because he had caused him mental suffering.
