First transgender Barbie designed after Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox, an actress and LGBTQ activist, is getting her own Barbie.

As part of its Tribute Collection, Mattel has designed a Barbie doll in her likeness. This is the first trans Barbie manufactured by the firm, which frequently models dolls after real-life persons.

Cox, a four-time Emmy winner and the first transgender woman of colour to have a main role on a scripted television show, “has always been an advocate for her expressing her voice and living truthfully,” according to the firm.

The doll is part of Barbie’s goal to continue to enhance diversity, and it honours the influence she has made as an advocate for LGBTQ rights, according to the company. To sculpt the doll and construct the garment, the studio worked directly with Cox. The Tribute Collection will also pay tribute to Lucille Ball, a trailblazer for women in the entertainment industry, and Queen Elizabeth II, who was honoured with a doll immediately before her Platinum Jubilee and on her 96th birthday.

Cox’s doll was also shown ahead of her 50th birthday, which falls on May 29. On Thursday, she celebrated both her birthday and her doll with a Barbie-themed party.

Barbie honors ‘real-life pandemic heroes’

Barbie is also making a donation in Cox’s honour to TransFamilySOS, a group important to her heart that is working to promote a more gender affirming and accepting environment, according to the press release.

“Working with Barbie to develop my own doll has been a dream of mine for years,” Cox stated. “I’m looking forward to people discovering my doll on store shelves and being able to add a Barbie doll modelled by a transgender person to their collection. I hope that by looking at this Barbie, others would be inspired to dream big like I have throughout my career. The area of dreaming and manifesting is such a powerful source that it inspires you to achieve more than you ever imagined possible.”
