First Special Representative against Islamophobia Appointed By Canada

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, said on Thursday that the country had chosen its first Special Representative to fight Islamophobia.

Amira Elghawaby is a former journalist who also helped organize the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), the largest Muslim organization in the nation. She was also a founding member of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.

According to a news release from the Prime Minister’s office, Elghawaby will oversee the federal government’s efforts to combat “Islamophobia, systemic racism, racial discrimination, and religious intolerance” in his capacity as the special envoy. She will give specific guidance to the Trudeau administration on the laws and policies that should be passed to combat the “threat” of Islamophobia.

Stephen Brown, CEO of the NCCM, expressed his support for her selection. Amira was “a passionate advocate while at NCCM, fighting so many crucial battles for our community at a time when we needed a champion,” according to Brown.

Without Amira, I’m not sure whether there would even be an NCCM, in all honesty. We are eager to go on cooperating with her, her office, and everyone else working to make Canada free of the threat of Islamophobia, he said. The appointment occurs as the anniversary of the murder of six Muslims who were shot dead on January 29, 2017, while attending prayer at a mosque in Quebec City, draws near. 19 additional people suffered injuries, some of which were critical.

In incidents of anti-Muslim violence since 2017, 11 people have died in Canada, according to Brown.

According to Trudeau, “no one in our nation should endure prejudice because of their faith,” and “Ms. Elghawaby’s appointment as Canada’s first Special Representative on fighting Islamophobia is a crucial milestone in our battle against Islamophobia and bigotry in all of its manifestations.” In Canada, which has a total population of roughly 38 million, there are about 1.8 million Muslims.
