First-Generation Apple iPhone sold for over 100 Times Its Original Price

Almost one hundred times its initial cost, a first-generation iPhone was auctioned off for $63,356.40.

The 2007 phone was auctioned off on LCG Auctions and was estimated to fetch $50,000, but it ended up fetching more than $13,000 more than that. It is still packed in its box. On Sunday, the phone was sold following 27 bids at a starting price of $2,500. Karen Green, the phone’s original owner saw its appraisal in 2019.

It was valued at $5,000 because it was an 8GB device (instead of a 4GB) and was in its original packaging. After obtaining a new job, her friends gave Green an iPhone. She chose not to open it, though, as she had already received a new phone.

I didn’t want to get rid of my phone, and I reasoned that it would never become outdated since it was an iPhone. Her friends most likely purchased for $499 to $599. On January 9, 2007, Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone at the San Francisco trade expo MacWorld.

Around five months later, it was made available for purchase. It became popular right away thanks to its sleek appearance, responsive (and at the time, fairly revolutionary) touchscreen, web surfing capabilities, and a 2-megapixel camera. Auctions have previously been held for first-generation iPhones. Through LCG, one was sold for $35,414 in August and another for $39,339 in October.

Apple has a devoted following, and many of its products are regarded by collectors as cultural artifacts and important milestones in the development of technology. An early Apple computer prototype from the 1970s sold for more than $670,000 in the previous year.
