Elahi joins PTI with confidants

Former chief minister of Punjab, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, has announced his departure from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party along with ten other former members of the PML-Q.

Elahi, who addressed a press conference in Lahore alongside PTI Vice President Fawad Chaudhry, said he had always stood by former prime minister Imran Khan during difficult times. Chaudhry confirmed Elahi’s decision to join PTI, adding that the party appreciates the role played by the PML-Q. The PTI vice president also welcomed the new PTI members to the party.

Elahi’s name has been approved for the role of PTI’s central president, and he will work wherever Imran Khan wants him to. Elahi had earlier met with Imran Khan at his Zaman Park residence, and senior party leaders from both sides attended the meeting.

Elahi had addressed a possible merger of the PML-Q with the PTI on January 15 and said his party’s decision would be revealed after a consultative meeting. His comments had led to a show-cause notice from PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat, who suspended his membership. However, the PML-Q electoral college office-bearers had authorised Elahi to take decisions on behalf of the party regarding its merger with the PTI on Imran’s offer.

Elahi lashed out at Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for shutting down the health card and said that no step would be taken that harms the PTI’s reputation. When asked if he was given a hint by the establishment to join PTI, Elahi said that if it was true, it was good, and he would try to make everyone move together.
