Dutch politician gets Twitter account suspended for responding to PM Shahbaz with anti Islam remarks

Geert Wilders, a far-right Dutch politician, had his Twitter account suspended after he wrote an anti-Islam message addressing Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

According to the leader of the anti-immigrant Freedom Party, Wilders, Twitter took the step after he breached its rules against hateful conduct.

The social media company removed Wilders’ tweet from Tuesday, in which he was responding to Sharif’s criticism of Islamophobic attacks in Europe.

Since Wednesday, he hasn’t sent a single tweet from his account. A request for comment from Twitter was not immediately returned.

Twitter has demonstrated that it is “an instrument of the elite” by silencing the Dutch opposition leader, according to Harm Beertema, a parliament member from the Wilders party, which is the third largest in the country after receiving just over 10% of the vote in last year’s election.

Wilders has been a vociferous opponent of Islam and migration to the Netherlands since 2004, when he was placed under police protection after receiving death threats. He frequently uses his Twitter account to criticise Islamic beliefs and asylum seekers.
