Domestic abuse soars by 38pc in UK after England loses football match

LONDON – Cases of domestic abuse soared drastically after the England national football team is in action and soared to 38 per cent after if they lost.

This year, England’s national football team missed lifting the final trophy against Italy in a nail-biting finish with penalties. As Italians chant It’s coming to Rome [not home] while for England fans, the moment was not the ordinary game as it was not less than war.

Experts believe massive fan following, which even led to a craze in some of the cases, other the unusual alcohol consumption as the factor behind most of the cases.

Recently, a number of women took to social media after the Euro 2020 final as England lost the European Football Championship putting women at a higher risk of domestic abuse.

Reports in British media cited that the number of people referred to the National Centre for Domestic Violence (NCDV) for protective court orders has soared by more than 400 compared to the five-week period before the tournament.

Stats from NCDV also suggest that domestic violence incidents soar, by up to a staggering 38 per cent when England lose a match compared to when they aren’t playing.

Following the gruesome incidents across the Kingdom, the Centre for Economic Performance (CEP), also published a report earlier this month that analysed more than half-million domestic abuse cases that were reported to Greater Manchester Police between 2012 and 2019. It also mentioned a surge related to soccer games.

A 2013 study by Lancaster University also pushed claims that football matches do not cause domestic abuse directly but there is a strong link between team wins and defeats. Domestic violence cases soar by 26 per cent when England won or drew a match and by 38 per cent when they lost.

Many still believe that soccer has nothing to do with violence as despite 1.6 million women in England and Wales experienced domestic abuse in the year 2020, a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services claims.

Experts also believe that soccer brings with it emotional and situational stressors, which create a storm with regard to incidents of domestic violence.

Furthermore, the pastime has been linked with an increase in testosterone levels, which some researchers have linked to aggressive behaviour. Meanwhile, women, who took to Twitter, also shared helpline numbers and urging everyone to reach out to women in distress.
