‘Connectivity at its peak’ – 4G signals now available on K2 base camp

SKARDU: Climbers on the world’s second-highest mountain can now enjoy high-speed 4G coverage after the 4G Base Transceiver Station has been made operational to improve connectivity at the K2 base camp.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, in a bid to promote the incumbent government’s vision of promoting tourism across Pakistan, has started a joint venture with numerous telecommunication operators which will also help out tourism potential in the remote areas.

With the activation of the telecom station at the K2 base camp area of Concordia, cellular coverage and fast internet access will be available for mountaineers that is crucial for them to interact with their families and seek help in case of any emergency during the summit. Furthermore, scientific research, environmental monitoring, and high-definition live streaming will also be started with the help of the latest technology.

The Special Communication Organisation SCO, a public sector org. working under IT Ministry, made the project operational to ensure communication at the base camp of Pakistan’s savage mountain.

Let it be known that the base station at the extremely difficult terrain has been named after late Pakistani mountaineer Ali Sadpara – who went missing in February 2021 while attempting to scale the K2 in winters.

Prime minister Imran Khan, who advocates that the tourism industry has a big potential to provide employment to Pakistanis, inaugurated the project during his recent visit to the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
