Canadian PM announces restrictions on sales, transfer, import of all handguns

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau launched new legislation that makes it illegal to own a weapon in Canada.

At a news conference, Trudeau announced, “This means that handguns will no longer be available to buy, sale, transfer, or import anywhere in Canada.”

In other terms, he continued, “we’re placing a ban on the gun market.” According to Trudeau, the new anti-gun legislation will punish gun smugglers and traffickers “by increasing maximum criminal sanctions and giving law enforcement more tools to investigate firearm offences.”

Under the new regulation, long gun magazines would “never” be authorised to hold more than five bullets.

“Gun violence is a complex subject, but the math is simple: the fewer weapons in our communities, the safer everyone will be,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

We don’t need automatic weapons that are designed to kill the most people in the shortest amount of time, Trudeau said, adding that while most gun owners use their handguns safely and legally, we don’t need assault-style weapons that are designed to kill the most people in the smallest period of time.

The declaration came after two recent horrific shootings in the United States. On May 24, a gunman attacked a Uvalde, Texas, elementary school and began fire, killing 19 pupils and two teachers.

On May 14, ten people were killed in a racist mass shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York.

Trudeau’s electoral campaign in 2019 committed to eliminating gun violence. In 2020, his administration outlawed more than 1,500 types of military-style assault weapons, following Canada’s deadliest gun rampage in recent history.

Between 2009 and 2020, handguns were “the most dangerous weapon present in the majority of firearm-related violent offences,” according to Trudeau’s office, accounting for 59 percent of such offences.

The number of registered handguns in the country increased by 71% between 2010 and 2020, to about 1.1 million, according to the statement.
