Burkini-Wearing Mother, Daughter Prohibited From Using Pool in Canada

According to Andalou Agency, a Muslim mother and daughter pair wearing burkinis were denied access to a Canadian waterpark.

Mother Halima Jelloul, her husband, and their two daughters reserved a room for the family of four at the Lilac Resort in Winnipeg, according to AA and CTV News. Muslim women frequently wear burkinis, which are full-body bathing suits. Except for the face, hands, and feet, the suit completely encloses the body. The family was told that because they were wearing burkinis, they could not use the pool.

When the family received a warning, according to Halima, her daughter started crying. It wasn’t exactly a happy time for us, she admitted. She claimed that even though they knew what a burkini was, people would still stare at you for wearing one on the beach every day. Halima said it was okay because education was necessary. Dalma Douida, her daughter, claimed that her mother was not even startled by the incident. Muslim ladies or anyone who dresses modestly, the 14-year-old continued, should speak up.

The family was allowed to use the water slides after a health inspector stepped in and clarified that the burkini was not against public health regulations. The family, however, decided to go. The proprietor of the hotel said that he did not realize the woman was wearing a burkini and mistakenly believed she was wearing casual street attire. He stated that he wanted to make amends with the family.

In 2021, hate crimes committed against Muslim populations climbed across Canada by 71%, according to a recently published study by the government department Statistics Canada. According to the survey, there were 84 occurrences of recorded attacks against Muslims in 2020 and 144 in 2021. The number of attacks increased after a dip from 2018 when there were a total of 182 reported occurrences against Muslims. In 2021, hatred cost us Canadian Muslims. Additionally, these figures do not provide the full picture because, as we well know, the actual number of hate crimes far outweighs the statistics on them, the National Council for Canadian Muslims (NCCM) tweeted in response to the publication of the report.

Despite being viewed by the outside world as a shelter for multiculturalism, experts in Canada previously warned MEE that the country has endured decades of anti-Muslim propaganda from politicians and the media.

According to Statistics Canada data, there have been more hate crimes against Muslims over the past ten years. The creation of a federal anti-Islamophobia plan that includes a precise definition of Islamophobia as well as financing to support victims of hate-motivated crimes were among the 61 suggestions in a study that NCCM published last year.

The group also demanded that municipalities sponsor neighborhood-based initiatives to combat Islamophobia and that Canadian provinces make sure their anti-racism directorates had adequate funding.
