He began his career on the Express-News channel as a journalist and newscaster. In April 2022, his “Imran Khan” YouTube channel, which he began in 2020, had more than 2.7 million subscribers. Additionally, he has served as the host of news shows for Samaa TV and GNN. Despite court orders from the Islamabad and Lahore High Courts and the issuance of protective pre-arrest bail grants intended to prevent the journalist’s arrest, Riaz was detained by Punjab Police as he entered the Islamabad Toll Plaza on July 5, 2022. Riaz has claimed that he was traveling “to the federal capital to get bail from the Islamabad High Court.

Later, Riaz posted a video to YouTube threatening to reveal the identities of those responsible for the purported regime change operation, in which outside forces allegedly sparked a constitutional crisis that led to the removal of the PTI government of Imran Khan and what Riaz refers to as an “American conspiracy” against Pakistani sovereignty. According to the Dawn news source, in a video he posted to YouTube the day before his arrest, Riaz directly addressed Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and alleged that he was threatened after asking questions from military sources about the country’s current political and economic situation.” In the video, Riaz criticized the Shehbaz Sharif-led government. Riaz also mentioned receiving threats against his family.

Imran Khan, a former prime minister of Pakistan, publicly condemned the “illegal arrests” and urged the populace and media to “unite and stand up against this fascism.” Asad Umar, a former official, declared that PTI party members would demonstrate at press clubs around the nation in response to what he called an “effort to stifle freedom of expression.”

Following the arrest, reports revealed widespread criticism of the handling of the situation as well as comments of worry based on similar ideological grounds promoting free speech. Ammar Ali Jan, a scholar, and activist, for instance, cautioned against the absurdity of “clumsy” uses of force in a “fight of ideas”. On July 9, 2022, Justice Baqar Najafi of the Lahore High Court granted him bail. At the police’s request, the FIA (Federal Investigation Agency) put his name on the Exit Control List.
