Bodies of Missing Teens Found a Day after Naltar Avalanche

Following an avalanche in Gilgit-Baltistan’s upper Naltar Valley on Wednesday, rescue workers discovered two young teen’s bodies Thursday hidden beneath the snow.

The boys, Zubair and Arif, were reported missing when an avalanche struck the valley’s Khayot village, according to Nomal police. According to the authorities, the night’s darkness made it difficult to find them during rescue efforts. But the locals carried on their rescue operations. In the morning, rescue personnel picked up where they left off, and after a few hours, they were able to find the bodies of both victims.

GB Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid had instructed Rescue 1122 and the local government to “make every conceivable effort” before the rescue of the dead. He had also expressed his sorrow at the incident. The tragedy occurs roughly a week after two lake eruptions in Diamer’s Tangir Valley caused at least four homes to be entirely demolished and 40 to be slightly damaged.

However, according to the government, no fatalities were reported. Locals claim that the rapid outburst was caused by an avalanche that suddenly fell into the Gichhar and Labar lakes. The past week has been marked by extreme cold, with temperatures below zero and constant snowfall in almost all parts of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that on the day of the occurrence, the temperature was -6°C in Astore and -5°C in Skardu.
