Action Being Sought Against Jeep Driver on Trail 4 in the Margalla Hills

The Margalla Hills National Park is protected by legislation, and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has filed a challan against a citizen for violating such laws on Trail 4 with his 4×4 vintage jeep.

Going off-road was not one of the items listed by the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB) as things to do on the walking/hiking trails, a guard at Trail 4 told Dawn on Saturday. Precisely because people are reckless and don’t take ownership of the national park, which they must also conserve, the IWMB is reluctant to open further paths. Laws are the same for everyone is an elitist worldview that needs to alter, he claimed.

The person who was transporting his international guests was aware of the rules and regulations in the national park, but he nonetheless rode on the trail, according to the IWMB staff. The person was “extremely nasty” when approached by the staff members who were guarding the national park; instead of apologizing. With images of the perpetrator, the incident quickly gained popularity on social media. There was no regard for the national park, the wildlife, or our park guards. Today, these people claimed Trail 4 was a jeep track and drove their vehicle inside. Then, when IWMB volunteers attempted to stop them, they were nasty to them, IWMB stated on Twitter.

Following the government’s austerity measures, IWMB had to let go of 30 employees, making the staff’s tasks harder recently. IWMB Chairperson Rina Saeed Khan told Dawn that the parliament’s passage of the Islamabad Nature and Wildlife Management Act will be extremely beneficial.

If the act is approved, the board can support itself by charging minimal admission fees to visitors and collecting operating costs. The board will be given more authority to take better care of the park, she said. She added that if the act was approved, it would give the board the authority to fine offenders, such as those who went off-roading on a hiking trail that was also part of the leopard preserve.
