79% of Twitter’s Indian Employees Dismissed without Notice By Elon Musk

Several current and former workers claim that the microblogging website Twitter, based in the US, fired almost 180 of its 230 employees in India on Friday.

The teams involved in content creation, collaborations, content curation, sales, and social media marketing were impacted by the cutbacks, they claimed. Many customers just woke up to cancel access, according to one employee who was ordered to leave on Friday and spoke to ET. The sources claim that just a tiny number of Indian workers—referred to as “survivors” by Twitter India staff—were given termination notices, which started to arrive early in the day. According to the allegations, “Survivors” are mostly tasked with working on teams that undertake crucial maintenance jobs and government engagement responsibilities.

An employee claims that these employees have been retained “for the time being” and that the social media platform would decide on their employment “soon.” Elon Musk, the co-founder of Tesla Inc., was known to have taken control of the platform and opted to fire staff members, including top managers, but employees told ET they had expected “some notice period” before being forced to leave. We may have been informed in advance. After logging out, individuals receive a notification that they have been fired. This is not how you do it, the Twitter employee who was let go on Friday claimed. Everyone believes that this email announcing the termination may have been the result of a face-to-face meeting. Our US peers assert that we will receive 60 days of severance pay.

A second employee who joined Twitter India two years earlier “had not received any email” telling him that he was being terminated but was instead signed out of all his company systems, emails, and Slack, the person alleged. Slack is a tool for workplace internal messaging. According to the speaker, it’s like waking up in the middle of nowhere and not knowing where to go. What is a middle-aged software engineer who was let go on a Friday supposed to do, ET was asked by another ex-employee. When this article was published on Friday, Twitter India’s external communications team had not responded to ET’s emails for comments on the layoffs. The firings at Twitter India are similar to how employees have been forced to leave their positions in other countries.

The new Twitter management Thursday morning sent out a worldwide email announcing the mass layoffs. To put Twitter on a sound financial footing, we will undertake the difficult step of reducing our global staff. The email, a copy of which ET has seen, indicated that they were aware that this would negatively affect a number of people who had made significant contributions to Twitter, but that this move was regrettably necessary to ensure the future of the company going ahead. Employees at Twitter from all over the world started tweeting about their resignations as soon as they got the email and the layoffs started.
