56-year-old Ayubia chairlift closed for public amid safety concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Galyat Development Authority (GDA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has issued a notice for immediate closure of the chairlift at the Ayubia resort, citing safety concerns.

GDA officials also mentioned a 2019 report, conducted by an Austrian company, which described the adventure ride ‘dangerous’ for human life.

Meanwhile, the decision to close the 56-year-old project came at a time when a preliminary restraining order has also been issued on the petition filed in the Abbottabad High Court against the expansion project of the Ayubia chairlift while the GDA Director maintained that decision to close the chairlift has nothing to do with the court’s verdict.

The one-page report of foreign safety specialists cited that WPK experts visited the spot and inspects the condition in detail of the project located around 26kms from the tourist hotbed of Murree. It concluded that the use of the chairlift is extremely dangerous under circumstances.

Officials said that despite being declared dangerous for human beings, another reason for the prolongation of the chairlift for almost two years is due to some of the ‘political’ reasons. “Locals used to protest, after which the project was not halted but it is not possible for now to risk any human lives”, it said.

Let it be known that many of the tourists were stranded in mid-air for several hours after the breakdown around three years ago.

In another development about the Ayubia park, a piece of land has become a bone of contention between the Wildlife Department of KPK and the Galiyat Development Authority.
