Harry Potter’s first edition garners whopping $471,000 at auction

The first edition of world famous novel Harry Potter has been sold for a whopping 471,000 dollars in the United States.

The auctioneers have termed the price as a world record for a 20th century work of fiction.

The book was printed in the U.S. as ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone’. The auction house of Dallas said only 500 copies with the specific binding were published and the final price was over six times the pre-sale estimate of 70,000 dollars.

Earlier auction prices for the renowned novel series have been set from $110,000 to $138,000.

In a statement, Heritage Auctions Executive Vice President Joe Maddalena said: “It is not only the extreme expensive Harry Potter book ever sold but it is also the most expensive commercially printed 20th-century work of fiction ever sold.”

It was sold by an American collector and the name of the purchaser was not disclosed.

As per U.S. publisher Scholastic, book’s British author J.K. Rowling went on to write six more books about the adventures of the orphaned boy wizard that have sold nearly 500 million copies across the world in 80 languages. These books were turned into eight films which made $7.8 billion at the global box office.
